Reiss Nelson will miss the Gunners’ trip to Anfield on Wednesday night through injury. The England U21-international is recovering from a knee problem and is not expected to return to training for at least another couple of weeks.

Nelson suffered the injury during the Europa League tie versus Standard Liege back on October 3rd and has not been available for selection since.

The Englishman spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim but since his return has struggled to nail down a regular place in Unai Emery’s side. Nelson has featured six times this season, making four appearances in the Premier League and one in each of the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

He’s found the net once so far, in the Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium back in September.

The 19-year-old may be the only player unavailable for the encounter with Liverpool, however Emery has already confirmed  Granit Xhaka has been dropped for the clash, whilst the likes of David Luiz, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Calum Chambers are all rested (Daily Mirror). Mesut Ozil, though, is included in the squad, but there are no guarantees that he will see minutes on the pitch.

High hopes for Nelson

His performances in Germany would have created much anticipation ahead of his return to London but it’s safe to say when he has featured, at least in the Premier League he’s been largely under-whelming.

Nelson managed seven goals in 23 Bundesliga appearances last season and so whilst things haven’t gone as well as many would have hoped, the Arsenal faithful remain confident they have a talented individual on their hands.
