Arsenal beat Ligue 1 side Angers SCO on penalties to secure a win in their penultimate pre-season friendly after Unai Emery took a mixed but mainly youthful side to France on Wednesday night.
The Gunners needed a second-half Reiss Nelson strike to tie the game up in the wake of Farid El Melali’s 13th minute opener. The game went to penalties where Henrikh Mkhitaryan could have won the game for Arsenal but he skied his spot-kick miles over the bar which has left many Arsenal fans blasting the 30-year-old.
Emiliano Martinez was left to be the hero as he saved ex-Arsenal midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide’s penalty to give Emery’s men a 4-3 win in a shootout.
Lots of Arsenal fans were left reeling by the performance of the Armenian, with one supporter brandishing him a clown. Other Gooners labelled him trash as well as garbage and useless.
Mkhitaryan joined the club from Premier League rivals Manchester United as part of a swap deal involving star man Alexis Sanchez going the other way. One member of the Emirates support said this deal would go down as one of the worst in history.
The 5 foot 10 midfielder has featured 56 times for the Gunners since joining in January 2018 but last season he only managed to start 19 Premier League matches, scoring one goal and assisting four more.
Other supporters believed that Mkhitaryan’s time in North London is done following his penalty miss, saying he is never going to play for Arsenal again. One fan even called the former Borussia Dortmund ace the biggest disappointment he had ever seen at the club.
