Arsenal face a defensive crisis ahead of their opening clash against on Sunday, with options slim on the left-side of defence.

The will be without for the first ten weeks of the campaign due to injury and only returned to training this week following a knee injury sustained at the World Cup – which has left Ainsley Maitland-Niles the leading contender to feature against the Citizens.

However, The Daily Mail  states that Unai Emery is considering a late swoop for Switzerland international Ricardo Rodriguez to bolster his defensive depth – with Monreal having entered the final 12 months of his contract and likely to leave next year.

25-year-old Rodriguez signed for from Wolfsburg last summer and the side are keen to retain his services, said to be demanding a figure of around £30m in order to approve a sale.

Arsenal already have two Swiss players in their squad at Stadium in the form of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Granit Xhaka.
