Schalke are ready to offer midfielder Leon Goretzka €10m (£8.9m) a year to stay at the German club, according to Kicker.

The German magazine reports the club are desperate to keep the 22 year old with the player’s contract expiring at the end of the season. The Bundesliga side have lost two key players on free transfers over the past two years (Joel Matip to Liverpool and Sead Kolasinac to Arsenal), and they don’t want Goretzka to leave in the same manner.

Arsenal were linked with the German international over the summer with the midfielder having been asked about the speculation by Sky Sports back in June.

Competition is believed to be very high for Goretzka with other Premier League clubs, as well as top European sides such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona, all competing for the attacking midfielder’s signature.

If he decides to reject Schalke’s reported new offer, he will be able to speak to other clubs in January about a free transfer.
