Striker reveals he will have news “soon”

|

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has denied he has signed a new contract with the Gunners but he has revealed that he is close to agreeing a deal to stay at the Emirates.

The Frenchman’s current contract expires in 2018, and there had been speculation that the 30 year old had been offered a one year extension which would make him almost 33 at the end of the new deal. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match against West Brom on Boxing Day, Giroud said:

“People have been saying I have signed a new contract. It is not true but maybe soon.”

Question marks had been raised about the French international’s future at the club after being displaced by Alexis Sanchez as the Gunners’ first choice striker this season. Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo have suggested that Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli has made Giroud one of his key targets for the January transfer window, but it looks likely now the player will put to an end any talk of leaving by signing a contract extension.
