Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has stated that he believes Granit Xhaka should have started in the club’s key Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger has a host of options in the heart of his team, so much so that Jack Wilshere has been allowed to go on loan to Bournemouth for the campaign.

The French coach has opted to play Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla in the last two games, with new man Xhaka on the bench despite impressing in a start against Watford last month.

The Switzerland international came off the bench to positive effect in the French capital and provided a bit more thrust in the centre of the park following his introduction.

Dixon feels that the former Borussia Monchengladbach man should have been given the nod to play against PSG and that the game was ideal for him.

“You have to look at the team selection,” the retired defender told ITV Sport, published by The Daily Mail.

“[Santi] Cazorla, yeah he will create something, but you’re playing at PSG and you’re going to be under the cosh a bit.

“You’ve got [Francis] Coquelin, you’ve got Xhaka on the bench.

“I’m not a manager, but you would think he would shore up that midfield area a bit.”

Arsenal drew the game with PSG 1-1 after Alexis Sanchez cancelled out Edinson Cavani’s opener.
