Arsenal are believed to be making headway in their attempts to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia, with Sky Sports stating that a £28 million fee has been agreed between the sides.

The North London side were forced to field inexperienced duo Rob Holding and Calum Chambers in their Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday and were duly exposed by an able Reds attack.

Serious injuries to both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista have left Arsene Wenger short of options, while Laurent Koscielny has also been afforded a longer summer break following his exertions at Euro 2016.

Mustafi has grown in stature since swapping Italian side Sampdoria for Valencia and is regarded as one of the toughest defenders in La Liga.

The Germany international played a role for his country in their World Cup success in 2014 and also featured at Euro 2016 for the distinguished nation.

Mustafi’s addition would offer Wenger a reliable and experience option, who could form a partnership with Koscielny that looks excellent on paper.
