Fabian ScharArsenal are reportedly keen on Fabian Schar but will face stiff competition from several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs as well as Inter Milan for the Basel defender.

And the 21-year-old’s representative Dimitrios Papadopoulos says although Schar is flattered by Inter’s interest he believes his client is more likely to end up in England or Germany:

‘Inter is a great club with a great history. Any player would be happy to play there.

‘But today we have had more contact with English and German clubs, not with those from Serie A. He is happy at Basel, where there is a great atmosphere.’

Schar, who won the Swiss Super League title last season, has made 21 appearances in all competitions so far, including all six of Basel’s Champions League group matches.

Schar, a Switzerland international, is contracted to Basel until 2015 but has an option in his current contract to extend it a further year.

It remains to be seen whether Arsene Wenger will strengthen Arsenal’s back-line when the transfer window re-opens in January. Personally, I think we have adequate cover in the centre-back position with Thomas Vermaelen and even Bacary Sagna able to fill in should either of Laurent Koscielny or Per Mertesacker pick up an injury.

If Wenger is looking to reinforce the back four this winter then he should only consider signing a right-back.
