Do we really need Cabaye? [have your say]

Yohan-Cabaye~5Less than eight days to go in this years summer transfer window and Arsenal are yet to spend.

The Gunners have been linked with a long list of players over the past few months, but none of the reported targets have joined Arsene Wenger’s side.

As a result, fans began to voice their concerns at the lack of spending after the Villa game, with the blame placed fully on Arsene Wenger, and rightly so.

What can only be seen as a panic bid for Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye a few days ago, rumoured to be around £12 million, which may be Arsene’s way of trying to calm the fans down a little. But the offer was quickly turned down by The Magpies. Something that was expected to be honest.

Despite the rushed bid, do we really need Cabaye though?

Well for starters, the Frenchman possesses Premier League experience, he is a box-to-box midfielder, who has great vision when creating chances and picking out through balls, not to mention he has excellent technique when it comes to dead-ball situations either from the penalty spot or from free kicks and he is also a good finisher. An all round talented midfielder in my opinion.

He isn’t world class in my opinion. But he is an extremely good player who would no doubt add quality and depth to the squad. I’m sure he’d like the opportunity to play for us if a deal ever did materialize.

Despite the manner in which the bid was made, I would very much like to see Cabaye sign for us.

We absolutely do not need another small, lightweight attacking midfielder. Defensive midfielder is what we need. Along with a top defender, goalkeeper and of course striker. However, I wouldn’t say no to Mata or Ozil if we had the chance to sign either.

Mind game to keep hope a live. The truth is, let’s not be surprised by 1 useless signing or none at all. If there was Will and ability yo buy players, its two months since transfer windows opened. What do you expect in six, seven days? Gooner 4ever.

I for one want Arsenal to buy players, and it has got to the stage where any one half decent will do to just get our squad to the recommended number! I though do not think it is Arsene’s fault that signings are not made! After all it his job to tell the board who would be good enough to join Arsenal and then the job is up to Dick Law to get the deal done!
I have to wonder just what Mr Law actually does other than pick up his wages? If Arsenal are ever to improve their woeful transfer dealing then Mr Law simply has to go and be replaced with someone who can actually do the job!
It is not Arsene Wengers fault.
    Keep the faith Gooner

All this you people are just saying, hmmmm…for me we really need this playmaker,i love seeing him at emirate.so,wenger should please quickly sign him before window close.

We don’t need a new midfielder and definetely not such an expensive one; Di Maria would be the best signing Wenger could’ve made during the transfer window. And of course we need at least one other player – maybe a defender (sakho) or who knows – maybe we can actually get Cabaye.

Although either Micah Richards or Toby Alderweireld would be great additions as both play CB & RB, and Alderweireld is very capable on the ball, my heart gets really excited dreaming we could buy both Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria. Of course we have good players in their positions, but for the long game, the whole season, we could become amazing. We would dominate possession against anybody. If Giroud got injured, would we be willing to let Walcott or Podolski play through the middle as striker. If not then we would need a striker. But the thought of Di Maria and Mata in the lineup excites me bigtime. The point is Cabaye. If we could get either of Mata or Di Maria why would we buy Cabaye?

    • Chris says:

Why buy Cabaye if we can get Di Maria and/Mata?
Well unless Di Maria and Mata have started playing as DM’s, one has nothing to do with the other.
We’ve yet to replace Gervinho, so a winger is certainly required, especially if Theo and Poldi are to be the backup strikers too. Ox being out compounds this problem.
With Arteta out, Diaby (as usual) injured, cm needs strengthening. DM needed strengthening BEFORE these injuries, remember.
Our strength in depth relies on players covering multiple positions and shuffling the pack. This versatility is great, but eventually you run out of players.

Minimum to challenge this year –
      Mata/Di Maria/other winger
      Cabaye/other CM
      CB
Top striker, or keep powder dry for Suarez/Rooney etc when January comes.

Failure to reinforce these positions will leave us 1 bad injury away from crisis.
Imagine losing Kos/Mert, Theo/Santi/Jack/Rambo, or OG… We’d be completely buggered right now.

I see Cabaye as a player who could join Arteta or Ramsey in a double DM pivot that worked so well at the end of last season. He has a good record of interceptions per game yet also doesn’t sacrifice the sort of creativity you would lose with a player like Fellaini in that position. Jack could be used further forward in a similar way to Cesc did in his last few years at Arsenal, with less defensive responsibilities.

  • Chris says:

    He’d be a great addition.

Not World Class? How can you tell in such a poor team? It’s obvious with talented individual players if they’re fantastic, no matter who they play for, but team players such as Cabaye cannot be judged fairly without good players around them.

  • JG says:

    As preoviously said ,
I think we’re more in need of a defensive MF instead of another attacking one.
The only player who could do a job in that position is Diaby but unfortunately we can’t rely on him due to his lack of fitness.
I don’t think we’ll manage to lure Fellaini to the Grove as he’ll more than likely prefer to reunite with Moyes, but I’m sure are plenty more players out there who could do a good job at shielding our back 4.
Idially we’ll finally sign someone with physical presence (ala Song) as all of our MFs are pretty short
