Why this man is NOT what Arsenal require this summer

|

JoveticThere has been so much talk about Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic joining Arsenal in the summer, with several media sources suggesting it’s very likely to happen.

One would not be denied the opportunity to feel excited about the prospect of having another quality striker at the club to play alongside Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud next season.

But is the 23-year-old Montenegrin really what we need?

The way I see it, we could sign someone else to aid our attack. Someone who would add more experience and drive up-front than the Fiorentina man.

Jovetic has a career total of 113 appearances in all competitions for the Florence club, managing only to find the net 36 times, which means his goals to game ratio roughly estimates to just over one every three. This isn’t bad, but doesn’t exactly scream out ‘goal machine’ to me. And for £30 million? You must be joking.

The Montenegro international is undoubtedly a talented footballer. However, paying so much for someone who is meant to score goals and the stats say otherwise would be a waste in my opinion. He may get better over as the years past, who knows? But Arsenal aren’t exactly in a position to start nurturing promising players ‘again’ into better ones only to ship them off when they become world-class.

Jovetic’s lack of goals could be down to the fact that he has suffered some rather lengthy injuries in his young career. Recurring muscular problems and damage to his crutiate ligaments have halted his progression.

So who should we sign instead?

Well I wrote an article recently on the potential transfer of Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal. With the way things have been going of late, the Argentine striker would be the man I’d like to see come in and take control of our goal-scoring problem.

He’s used sparingly at Real Madrid at present, and if you compare the two players in this piece, we all know who is better in front of goal. Plus, Higuain would come at a cheaper price than Jovetic, whose price is clearly inflated due to the interest in him. His goal (115) to game (251) ratio roughly comes to just over one every two games with Real, so why settle for a less productive and expensive option when you can grab someone who has a better GTGR (goal to game ratio) at a more realistic price for the quality?

Higuain’s price may rise as interest in him does too. But if we could either have Jovetic or Higuain join our club in the summer, then I think the majority would pick the latter of the two.

come on guys, really??? this guy is class and stop using stats to form your opinion of him.. was d bergkamp a goal machine??????

  • bc says:

what bloody tosh. How many goals did TH14 have after 113 appearances or Dennis Begkamp or even Theo Walcott come to that?

I agree that there are better goal machines around, however it is not goals that we lack. You only have to look at the goals scored columns and that fact that our attacking quadrant of walcott, cazorla, podolski, giroud have score more goals than any other attacking quad (in england) and could well end the season with around 70 goals. What we lack is quality in depth, at the end of the day our back up attacking quadrant is chamberlain, rosicky, arshavin and gervinho who have managed just 11 goals. There is no doubt in my mind that Jovetic is better than any of the 4 and if we could get one more player on top jovetic to replace arshavin and rosicky or gervinho we would then have the strength in depth we currently lack at leasdt in the attacking third.

Actually with his current run of form and potential I would like us to get Andy Carroll

  • Jack Giroud says:

Its a waste of fund. Y pay 30m 4 jovetic wen we can get soldado for 10m, lukaku for 15m or benteke for 15m? I completely disagree. I even prefer lewandowski of 25m to jovetic.

Dennis bergkamp had a bagful of goals 115 games into his career and if anelka hadnt had his head turned by his advisors you would never have heard of henry.Play podolski up top once hes fully acclimatised next year and maybe invest in higuain who scores regularly in spain mind you my gran would fancy playing up frobt in that madrid team

  • julian says:

Higuains useless, Jovetic don’t know much about him but would suit Arsenal better as we usually walk the ball in the net.

  • den says:

Why not tempt benteke. He is young, strong and he knows where the net is.
