Why this man is NOT what Arsenal require this summer

|

JoveticThere has been so much talk about Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic joining Arsenal in the summer, with several media sources suggesting it’s very likely to happen.

One would not be denied the opportunity to feel excited about the prospect of having another quality striker at the club to play alongside Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud next season.

But is the 23-year-old Montenegrin really what we need?

The way I see it, we could sign someone else to aid our attack. Someone who would add more experience and drive up-front than the Fiorentina man.

Jovetic has a career total of 113 appearances in all competitions for the Florence club, managing only to find the net 36 times, which means his goals to game ratio roughly estimates to just over one every three. This isn’t bad, but doesn’t exactly scream out ‘goal machine’ to me. And for £30 million? You must be joking.

The Montenegro international is undoubtedly a talented footballer. However, paying so much for someone who is meant to score goals and the stats say otherwise would be a waste in my opinion. He may get better over as the years past, who knows? But Arsenal aren’t exactly in a position to start nurturing promising players ‘again’ into better ones only to ship them off when they become world-class.

Jovetic’s lack of goals could be down to the fact that he has suffered some rather lengthy injuries in his young career. Recurring muscular problems and damage to his crutiate ligaments have halted his progression.

So who should we sign instead?

Well I wrote an article recently on the potential transfer of Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal. With the way things have been going of late, the Argentine striker would be the man I’d like to see come in and take control of our goal-scoring problem.

He’s used sparingly at Real Madrid at present, and if you compare the two players in this piece, we all know who is better in front of goal. Plus, Higuain would come at a cheaper price than Jovetic, whose price is clearly inflated due to the interest in him. His goal (115) to game (251) ratio roughly comes to just over one every two games with Real, so why settle for a less productive and expensive option when you can grab someone who has a better GTGR (goal to game ratio) at a more realistic price for the quality?

Higuain’s price may rise as interest in him does too. But if we could either have Jovetic or Higuain join our club in the summer, then I think the majority would pick the latter of the two.

    agreed.

    Jovetic is overrated

Benzema or hiquain are the way to go

David Villa can offer more compared to others and possibility is we can get him for cheap. He is a game changer and prolific in front of goal. What Arsenal need is a quality player who can score out of nothing IMO.

I disagree, Jovetic is really good as a supporting striker or a left winger. he’s kind of like a Robert Pires to me (in my own opinion). As for the striker, it is better to buy one who is in current form. So i would go with Burak Yilmaz of Galatasaray.

    What about Burak Yilmaz?

  • Sou1 says:

Don’t get the Jovetic bandwagon and no-way Wenger would spend £30m on any player. A good player, not great, and inferior to his compatriot Vucinic.

Why spend £30m on Jovetic when you can bag Michu for £15m?

  • goonerboy says:

Why not Stefan Kießling? He’s on fire in bundesliga this season and has been scoring conssistently seaoon by season.

You don’t know what you talking about! Jovetic is what arsenal needs if you can’t see that you don’t know about football

  • Andrew says:

Wrong, untrue, stats can be deceiving. Compare the teammates of both Jovetic at Fiorentina and Hiquain at Real, many of Hiquain stats are inflated due to the talent of Ronaldo, Ozil, etc.

What Arsenal needs is a player who knows where the net is at every opportunity. During games, Arsenal create so many chances but few or sometimes non is converted. Villa is the man we need. Also, there are other young players [not big names] in clubs all over the world who could score goals when they have the opportunity. Scout for them. Let us not pay huge money and bring the TORRES episode to Arsenal.

    whats wrong with podolski????
Lets face it had he not joined in the summer and we were (like we are) on the look out for someone with bags of experience, is clinical in front of goal, wont be bullied off the ball and is more than capable of combining with other players. those of us with any knowledge would mention Podolski as a viable option. (imo he could be just as lethal in front of goal is the newly departed greedy badger)
I’m not saying their isnt a better striker out there, but we have to be realastic. Wenger is never going to pay the sort of money it would require to get a player further up the footballing tree
