Would the potential signing of this Dutch ace see RVP stay at Arsenal?

It wasn’t too long ago that Robin van Persie publicly announced that he would not be signing a new contract beyond the summer of 2013, citing the lack of ambition of the club as the main reason.

But with the signings of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Carzola, who is set to complete his move from Malaga sometime this week, Van Persie is rumoured to be impressed with what the club are doing in the market, with reports suggesting he could reconsider his earlier statement and sign an extension at The Emirates.

Having already signed the three abovementioned names, we seem to be in unfamiliar territory now as Arsene Wenger does not appear to be done with his chequebook this summer.

It actually looks like we’re finally getting what we asked for – the gaffer spending some of that money we keep hearing about after significantly reducing the club’s debt.

Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin is strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, while moves for Yann M’Villa, Clint Dempsey and Hugo Lloris are still being weighed up by Wenger as reports suggests.

Another player who has been linked with us recently has been Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel.

I wrote an article on this young right-back a few weeks ago, suggesting that he would be an amazing signing for the club, someone to give the fringe players a run for their money as well as our Mr. Consistent and first-choice full-back Bacary Sagna.

But could Van der Wiels’s potential arrival really be what pushes Van Persie to sign a new deal?

Possibly. But then again, our recent summer transfers and future potential signings may be based on the fact that Wenger intends to sell Van Persie and use that money on the reported targets.

Whether or not he does to sign a new contract based on our current actions, I wouldn’t care much.

The statement he posted a few weeks back will haunt him for a long time, should he choose to stay, and the fans will not quickly forget about it.

In my opinion, he should have kept quiet and had faith. Most of the Arsenal faithful are already angry with him and making a u-turn, in my opinion, will do nothing to soften the current situation he’s put himself in.

He would be better off leaving the club. Then again, he is entitled to his own opinion and perhaps the statement was released to light a fire up the club’s and Wenger’s backside. The again, I still want him to leave!

I just don’t get people who say they want RVP to leave. He said what myself, and many many other Arsenal fans have been saying for years. Wenger doesn’t listen to me or other fans. It seems RVP has made him listen. How the heel can you have a go at him for that?
Seriously. Are you an Arsenal fan or an Arsene fan?

    • Joe Bryden says:

      Well said, Richard.

    • aku says:

      yes,100% agree with you,richard…van persie,u r our captain !

    • graham says:

i totaly agree with you richard,we all wanted the club to start spending on more established players,so well done robbin for that, however lets hope that what you said is what you ment,ie its not about the money its about the clubs ambition, well the club is showing ambition,so now prove to every arsenal fan it was about ambition

Time heals all. He can change his mind, and IMO he has no option but to, from an ethical standpoint. If he still leaves it will expose him as a liar and money-chaser, because the club has satisfied the “ambition” claim.

  • Bermy Boy says:

Maybe we should be thanking RVP for forcing Arsenal’s hand into being more ambitious in the transfer market! He pretty much exposed their talks by saying they didn’t seem ambitious enough… and it’s really about time that we are buying players that are ready now…

For one thing his agent probably wrote it, and do you really think Wenger or whoever undersold the ambitions of the club!? He probably just didn’t believe we would seriously be after players like Cazorla, or that we would lose out like we did on Mata. I wouldn’t blame him so much for that, but if he was seriously concerned about ambition, with a serious desire to stay at Arsenal, he should have stayed quiet and waited to see how we did this summer. He could have come out with the statement later if nothing happened.
Stop making RVP out to be some white knight. He is looking out for no.1. We’ll have a great squad if he stays, but don’t let’s start thinking he’s trying to do us any favours.

    He’s class. He should stay.

  • Joe Bryden says:

    Well said, folks

  • Mr Creosote says:

Why wouldn’t you want a top class striker to stay at the club? I’d rather he was here, even if it was for only one more season. It would greatly increase our chances of winning something. IF we can get good money for him fine, but lets not sell him for a pittance just for the sake of it.

Plus, I think 99% of Arsenal fans would forgive him if he stayed and carried on scoring the goals. He may have tarnished his reputation, but he hasn’t ruined it completely.

As for him being reportedly impressed by our summer activity, I feel there’s a good chance that it was actually the club who put that rumour out there, so if Robin does back down, he can do so without losing face.

Any player of quality can then give us fans heart attacks upon heart attacks by coming out and saying what RVP said. It was unforgivable at the time and therefore an example ought to be made of him by selling him ONLY if he comes out again apologises and explains his actions. If he does, I’ll be the first to forgive him.
He might have set a horrible precedent here if no action was taken aginst him.

  • bc says:

I tell you what would make him stay. we sell arshavin for 5m then hand that to barca for affellay (his best pal) van der wiel and de jong would be an absolute double bonus.

  • Moe says:

I would thank Rvp for what he did. Let’s face facts guys had RVP not done this wud we have signed these players we now boost of? Besides Wanye Rooney pulled a similar stunt and ended up with the EPL title. So please if he stays and gives us another 37 goals who a shit

  • UMOH EKWO says:

The question of Arsenal fans forgiving him doesn’t arise because he did no wrong. He has prompted a new thinking for Arsenal and we love and congratulate him for that. Did you want him to die in silence while the club kept taking fans for granted year after year? Thanks RVP for your action. Arsenal will be better off for it.
