‘I’m hoping Mertesacker can become a leader for Arsenal’

Former Arsenal skipper Frank McLintock believes that Per Mertesacker can become a quality leader for the Gunners and also reckons he is the man who will put an end to the clubs defensive issues.

A few days ago, McLintock told talkSPORT’s ‘Sports Breakfast Show’:

‘Arsenal sat back a bit but they defended well in the second half. I’m hoping Mertesacker can become a leader for Arsenal. He’s tall enough and has got plenty of caps for Germany, so hopefully he will become a big star.’

I am aware that Mertesacker has only played for Arsenal twice, but in both of those matches he has appeared strong. His distribution of the ball still needs some improvement, but he is a big player in a big position for our club.

Mertesacker mentioned last week how he hoped to emulate Arsenal legend Tony Adams and so far there is no denying that our defence has looked a lot better with him in it. We were very unlucky to come away with only a point in Germany earlier this week. However, I am pleased with the point that we gained.

I am a massive fan of having a defender as a captain, as I believe central defence is probably one of the most important positions on the pitch and most players in this position have the capabilities and organisation skills to become a good leader/captain…like Tony Adams.

In terms of experience, for me, it makes sense for him to be Arsenal captain. However, he won’t get that title until he is able to prove himself in the position and to the club and fans.

I am not saying for a second that Robin van Persie is not a good captain because he is, but he is in a position where he is less effective as a captain, and perhaps the pressure of being captain of Arsenal should be given to a player who is used to it and is in a better position to give orders to people, thus allowing Van Persie to concentrate on doing what he does best – bagging goals.

I would agree with you regarding captaincy, but you seem to be forgetting a bit about the Verminator, who, if he can avoid these injuries, could make an absolute killer captain.
