Fighting for a place

It’s that time of year down in Oz, the rival ‘codes’ are fighting for coverage of their finals series. Add in the Egg Chasers World Cup and its wall to wall footy…sorry football and rugby.

2 years in and I still don’t understand minor premiers, preliminary finals, elimination finals…give me a straight forward win the league and get crowned champions any day!!! (By the way go Tigers, go Pies).

With all this, football takes even more of a back seat in the sports coverage stakes. But at least we get to keep the small hours as our own.

Anyway back to real football and with the restarted season now underway, how have the newbies fitted into the Arsenal way?

Gervinho – Red card aside, Geo has shown he’s a class player who knows how to beat the man and put in a telling cross. A steal at £10 million.

Carl Jenkinson – Carl’s almost puppy like enthusiasm is infectious and he has the perfect mix of ability and youth to cover Sagna. Future England potential? If he switches allegiances from Finland.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – yet to take a serious bow for Arsenal, but if England U21 performances are anything to go by, then he will be a very good player. Carling Cup squad, then who knows.

Per Mertesacker – in Arsene’s words: ‘he’s calm and he talks and he communicates. When a German communicates, you listen.’ The perfect foil for Verm (when fit) and will hopefully bring some Adams like composure to the back four.

Mickey Arteta – Again to quote Arsene: ‘he is a class act. He had a very good first half and overall he did very well. You could see he has all the ingredients to be a perfect Arsenal player.’ Along with his more direct passing style, MA8 should provide the mature head along side Ramsey/Wilshere throughout the season.

Yossi – odd loan deal with Chelski, adds flair to midfield, will be good cover for Jack, Rambo and Mikel.

Santos and Young – yet to really feature, so no comment.

In my humble view, good business, if a bit panicked, and at a profit to keep the board happy!

When all the suspensions and injuries are over, let the fight for places begin!!!

AOC will make his debut in the carling cup no doubts about it.Let us hope that he makes that place his own pushing Wenger to play Theo up front.

If we change to 4-4-1-1 with Rvp in the hole and Theo at the front, Gervinho and AOC at the flanks with Song and Arteta in the middle then I think that we will get more out of these players but for that AOC has to perform well to match Wenger’s expectations. But then I must be dreaming
