Why Wojciech Szczesny is the real deal

Funny how 12 months ago Wenger was roundly condemned for not investing in Mark Schwarzer and trusting two young Poles to compete for the position of Arsenal No.1 keeper.

Now I am not one to defend Wenger on everything and we all know he has made some mistakes as of late, or we think at the moment he is making mistakes, but let’s all hold our hands up and apologise on the goalie front because Wojciech Szczesny is the REAL DEAL!

In 2011, due to the unfortunate injury to his colleague and national compatriot Lukasz Fabianski, Szczesny has taken the opportunity to establish himself emphatically, not only as Arsenal’s no.1 but Poland’s as well. During a difficult time for the team in the latter part of the season, Szczesny was a huge plus, keeping 8 clean sheets in 15 games in the Premier League. I don’t blame him for the last minute debacle at Wembley as Kozzer should have hit the ball into row Z.

He commands the area well and he is constantly communicating with his back four. His dominance in coming for the high balls will give our central defensive pairing this season huge confidence and I virtually guarantee we will concede fewer goals from set-pieces over the course of the season. His reflexes are superb, as we saw in several top saves against Udinese, and is very fast of his line to narrow angles down.

Amusing to see the confidence and stature of our younger keeper who cost us nothing and has grown under the tutelage of Gerry Peyton, when compared to the same aged £20 million pound comedian Man United have between the sticks currently.

So well done Gerry and whilst we are on the Man United comparisons praise indeed for Wojciech from our favourite former goalkeeping coach, Arsenal legend Bob Wilson, whose opinion we all trust, likens our new no.1 to United’s recently retired shot-stopper.

‘He’s brilliant.’

‘He is built like Edwin van der Sar, he plays like him and he can be as good as him. Arsenal need to just keep playing him and let him grow into the position. He could well be Arsenal’s goalkeeper for the next 10 years.’
