Why Wojciech Szczesny is the real deal

|

He has now played 6 times for the full Polish side and his most recent outing versus Georgia only last week saw him again keep a clean sheet in a single goal victory. I read a report on ‘Polish football Online’. – the excerpt below sums it up beautifully:

‘Jakub Blaszczykowski’s 36th-minute strike and a series of impressive saves by Wojciech Szczesny was the difference in the game.’

‘The defensive line was yet again weak and if not for Szczesny, Poland could have easily lost this game.’

Perhaps we should not be so surprised. After all, his father was a Polish International keeper so the pedigree was there and Wojciech himself has always appeared hugely self-confident. Let’s not forget, he had a very successful loan spell two seasons ago at Brentford and there is a lovely quote from the then Bees manager Andy Scott in April 2010:

‘His performances suggest that he would not be out of place in the Championship or even the Premier League. It has reached the stage where when he lets in a goal we wonder why he hasn’t saved it.’

So in conclusion, we should give credit to Wenger on this one. He gave Szczesny a long-term deal last November before he had even made his Premier League debut, when the rest of us were crying into our beer and moaning that he would not spend an extra million to secure the services of Schwarzer or Given.

I hope he is right on a few of the other youngsters, but I am sure most of us would agree that Szczesny is the real deal and let’s hope he is indeed a giant in that goal for the next 10 years.

When asked the question on Sky Sports before the Liverpool game yesterday, he himself told the viewers that he was a Gooner growing up and doesn’t want to play anyways else. Great news for all!
