It has been widely reported that Arsenal are going to turn their attention to Scott Dann this weekend, and could table a £10 million bid for the Birmingham centre-back during the month.
You may recall that the 24-year-old Englishman suffered a major injury last season – a torn hamstring – and it is thought that Arsene Wenger wants to check that he has fully recovered before tabling a bid for him.
In my opinion, I do not understand why we are stopping our pursuits of Chris Samba, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka to sign Scott Dann, it just doesn’t make sense to me. I understand that the Brum defender maybe a bit cheaper, but the hierarchy at Arsenal have stated that we have money to spend this summer…so where is it???
In my opinion, Dann is a step down from every other player that we have been linked with and, in all honesty, I really do not see him as an ideal solution to resolve our defensive problems.
Don’t get me wrong, he is a good defender, but not an Arsenal one.
Ok, Dann has Premier League experience, but if we want to solve our defensive problems then we will need to do better than signing a Championship centre-back this summer.
Wenger needs to get his cheque book out and sign us a top quality centre-back, especially if we are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Wenger is set to send chief scout Steve Rowley to watch Birmingham’s first game against Derby this weekend to check on his fitness.

@Legoon: Let me remind you…The number of goals conceded by Arsenal last season in EPL was 43. Blackburn conceded 59, Birmingham conceded 58, and Bolton conceded 56.
By your logic we should look at neither Samba or Cahill. How would they improve our defense ?
By the way were you part of the brigade who were shouting for Scott Parker….by the way West Ham also got relegated. I would rather put my faith on Wenger than you while choosing players. You could blame him for procastination but do not doubt his ability to find the right talent.
I am not saying we do not need a defender. But let Wenger choose as he knows more about football than you. So if (as per you) Scott Dann is second rate, Samba and Cahill are same.
Whatever knowledge wenger had has long gone to waste, he’s just spinning money from fools just like you.

I also fully understand that descency is not your forte..otherwise you would not made comments like what you have made. Or you would not call others “fools” without knowing them at all….But anyway perhaps I was expecting a lot.

hello, promoting players is not the same as saying they are good enough, wenger has promoted many players these last years and where are we? The club will never win anything with it’s currect crop of defensive players, never.
It matters not who Wenger buys in defence. We will struggle without a defensive coach – good enough and free enough to :
> Organise the 1st team defence as a tight effective unit.
> Train up young players to DEFEND WELL !
Because we have lost all balance between attack and defence we have developed no good young defenders of our own … not one. Clichy was a good footballer – not a good defender. Djourou ? Senderos ? Gibbs ? They learn purist technique first, keeping the ball out of our net last.
1. As Col says, Wenger sees in a player, skills of which the rest of us have no idea. That’s why he’s manager of Arsenal and we are not even on his staff.
2. And listen to Chris’s wise words that no amount of defence spending will suffice without the vital addition of COACHING and COHESION that goes with it.
dann?…..the issue really is what price will wenger offer?…..he wont meet the asking price of 10…he will offer 5 or 6….and hope that relagated birmingham will take it out of desperation. Expect a long drawn out negotiation with possibly a stalemate.
