Why signing this centre-back wouldn’t help our defensive problems at all

It has been widely reported that Arsenal are going to turn their attention to Scott Dann this weekend, and could table a £10 million bid for the Birmingham centre-back during the month.

You may recall that the 24-year-old Englishman suffered a major injury last season – a torn hamstring – and it is thought that Arsene Wenger wants to check that he has fully recovered before tabling a bid for him.

In my opinion, I do not understand why we are stopping our pursuits of Chris Samba, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka to sign Scott Dann, it just doesn’t make sense to me. I understand that the Brum defender maybe a bit cheaper, but the hierarchy at Arsenal have stated that we have money to spend this summer…so where is it???

In my opinion, Dann is a step down from every other player that we have been linked with and, in all honesty, I really do not see him as an ideal solution to resolve our defensive problems.

Don’t get me wrong, he is a good defender, but not an Arsenal one.

Ok, Dann has Premier League experience, but if we want to solve our defensive problems then we will need to do better than signing a Championship centre-back this summer.

Wenger needs to get his cheque book out and sign us a top quality centre-back, especially if we are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Wenger is set to send chief scout Steve Rowley to watch Birmingham’s first game against Derby this weekend to check on his fitness.

Do you agree with me?

Would the signing of Dann be a step back for Arsenal?

  • WHY THIS; says:

WENGER SHOULD LEAVE ARSENAL,BUT IF HE IS A SHAREHOLDER WELL AND GOOD LETS WAIT NEXT SEASON AND SEE.”WE SHOULD NOT JUDGE A FREINDLY MATCH WITH PREMIER LEAGUE,HE WAS HEARD SAYING”AM A REAL GOONER.WISH YOU THE BEST.

    • Patrick says:

We are not judging from the friendly. No one you speak to will say that this is the case. Rather, we are judging from the collapse of the last season, the season before last and the inability of the club to address our defensive issues.

Look at it like this and I’m sure it’ll make sense why we shouldn’t go for Dann – He was one of the CB’s, that played for Birmingham, who got relegated last season. Now, do we really need someone like that?

  • WengersGuideDog says:

there is a simple reason why we are looking at him, and no longer at samba, cahill or jagielka.

the later would all cost over 10m. Dann is expected to be up for sale for 10m, if not just under. If you look back, you’ll notice that wenger has NEVER spent more than 10m on a defender.

Poor article from the Samba -Cahill technocrats who have no clue on what Arsenal defenders must have . Scott Dann has very good technical qualities both on the ground and in the air .He has the age on his side and time to be moulded into a full Arsenal defender who knows what is required to win and defend in EPL games .He will be much better than Squillaci and will pave way for Squillaci’s exit . He will certainly be useful because he can partner all our three defenders TV , Koscielny and Djourou and provide the right balance for ground and aerial defending on all the defensive pairs .

He has good recovery and was the reason why Birmingham had a good home record 2009-2010 , and part of 2010-2011 .He was the key player in the Bham defence against all the teams who like to bomb the penalty area with high balls . He has a good chance to be a success at Arsenal and you should know that for his price and abilities it is a good deal .

also it must be duly noted the MAIN reason why birmingham got relegated was because he was injured!! without his half a season absence I doubt they would have gone down

  • Lonya says:

Wenger is a more a spoiler than a mentor to Arsenal. He neva thought of buying a quality playa but usually thought of buying a cheap one who doesn’t perform. It’s a tyme he should leave arsenal & look for better Coach.
