Should Arsenal just splash out £17M for this man?

Arsene Wenger is reportedly still looking to sign Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill, but will have to fork out at least £17 million for his services this summer.

So I ask, should Wenger just whip out his cheque book and sign the player for the amount stated above?

Well, it may not be as simple as that, as it appears the North London club could face stiff competition from big-spenders Manchester City, who are also said to be interested in the defender, and could potentially offer Cahill a better wage if he were to join City this summer.

Personally, I think it’s important that we seal the deal as soon as possible before the situation worsens. We have recently lost out on Phil Jones, who joined United earlier in the week, so it is vital that we get some players on our books, and if that means throwing £17 million (a release clause figure in his contract) at Bolton to acquire Gary Cahill this summer, then so be it.

Part of our problem has been the indecisiveness to actually part with the money, which has cost us dearly in recent seasons.

We could have added a number of players to our squad during the winter window, but because we were too slow to negotiate transfers, they unfortunately fell through.

Times need to change at Arsenal and rapidly. We need to become more ruthless when it comes to managing our transfers and seal deals faster. We cannot keep losing out on our targets to other clubs. We seem to dwell for too long, and then, by the time we make a move for the player in question, he has already signed for another club.

In the next two weeks, I would like to see the Gunners try to acquire at least two players – one being Bolton’s Gary Cahill for £17 million.

arsene said he will assess bartley in pre-season. if he’s ready for first team then we will have 4 central defenders. why 17 millions for this average dude?
phil jones got all the hypes because he played for a small team and got chance to play in the first team. in contrary bartley have to be sent out on loan. it doesnt mean he’s better, in fact he just joined chris smalling on the bench.

I wouldn’t call this guy average, he’s a very talented defender… He’s Big, Strong, a leader and is good in the air. He can only improve. Bartley should be loaned out to an EPL club where he will get games and assess him from there…same with Miguel.

I would be displeased to say the least if we didn’t buy a quality CB. Bartley while a highly rated youngster is not the answer for the Club this year and while I think Cahill is far from Average I would favor a move for Samba. He’s much bigger and commanding in the air also I think Kos is very similar to Cahill, so why spend all that cash on someone that wouldn’t bring anything new in the defense? It’s the same argument that most supporters have about the midfield i.e all the players are small and lack directness in front of goal. So why make that same mistake at the back? I say lets go BIG & MEAN… Samba is the man to get the job done IMO.

If we don’t sign Gary Cahill I will be prone to bludgeoning my head. We NEED him.

Yes pure and simple!! We need him!

dont get the hype particularly… there ae much better options of players proven at a higher level than him. hes not that fast, which wouldnt work with our high line, isnt hugely tall, anbd although i would take him, we could get better. dont think hes better than kos and/or JD will be this coming season. would rather have vertonghen, or subotic or even sakho. all young but extremely talented and internationals. cahill is decent, but for 17 million, we could get much better… again, as everyone knows, english players, overhyped and prices… eg. caroll, henderson, jones etc.

cahill is a good player but i think we need someone more like robert huth from stoke, he’s tall, strong, good in the air and a good leader. we have vermaarlean & kosielny who good on the ground so it would be a nice mix and he reminds me abit of tony adams. arsene always seems to want to get defenders who can pass, which is ok but firstly they have to defend. another thing they need to be proven premier league defenders so we know exactly what they are capable of in this league and they can hit the floor running. we also need a left back, for me gibbs is a good player but there is no way on earth he is a full back, his positioning is crap and he cant defend, wenger needs to see this coz if gael goes and gibbs is our 1st choice left back we r gonna b in trouble! oh 1more thing ryu myaichi needs to be kept with us, he looks better than any player we’ve been linked with & he’s already our player!

I tink bolton shld be given squilaci and £13m.It wil be nice to see a samba and cahill pairing at centre back next season with vermaleen on d left bak position.

  • col7t9 says:

i reckon kocielny would make a good left back too!

People want us to buy all the defenders in the world. Some want us to buy Richards, yet ManCity wants Cahill! I ask, what position in the pecking order is Cahill in the England team? People will be surprised he will not be able 2 displace Koz when he gets to Arsenal. Our defenders are good. Koz has had only his 1st season in the premiership & had to play more games than both he & AW expectd because of V5’s injury. I think our defending is the problem. We are the only team in the world where even defenders entertain!

To quote you…’Part of our problem has been the indecisiveness to actually part with the money, which has cost us dearly in recent seasons.’
Can you catagorically name which players we have lost out on (and I do not mean media rumours)or are you just trotting out another of the popular media myths surrounding Arsene Wenger without any actual facts to support your claim. Could it be that you are confusing indecisiveness with Wengers refusal to pay ridiculous inflated prices for players who are hardly any better than those we already have. Or maybe you have a direct line to the inside workings of Arsenals transfer dealings.
