10 Things You Should Know About...

TEN things you should know about Arsenal target Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

|

With Arsenal and Manchester United apparently locked in a battle to sign Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, we at Gunnersphere.com thought it only be appropriate to give you an insight on who the lad actually is:

1. Alex Chamberlain is the son of former Portsmouth and England player Mark Chamberlain. Alex was born in Portsmouth on the 15th of August 1993, but joined Southampton’s academy at the age of 7.

2. On the 2nd March 2010, Alex made his first-team debut for the Saints, and in doing so, became Southampton’s second youngest player to appear for the squad behind Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.

3. Alex has followed in his fathers footsteps by playing in the same position as a winger.

4. Chamberlain was called up for the England Under-18 squad against Poland on the 16th of November 2010. He played the first 45 minutes before being substituted. On the 2nd of February 2011, he was promoted to the England Under-21 squad for a friendly against Italy. Chamberlain came on in the 60th minute, replacing Arsenal youngster Henri Lansbury. The Saints winger showed great pace in the game – sadly for England, Ben Mee tripped Juventus striker Giannetti in the box 2 minutes from time and Macheda nonchalantly slipped his penalty into the corner – England lost 1-0.

5. His full name is Alexander Mark David Oxlade-Chamberlain and is 5’11’’ according to the clubs official website

Let’s take a half-time break and check out Alex Chamberlain in action:

Back to it:

6. This season Alex Chamberlain made 36 appearances for Southampton, scoring 9 goals along the way.

7. This season, his first goal came in his first competitive start for Southampton, which was against Bournemouth in the Carling Cup on the 10th of August 2010. His first league goal was the match winner against Oldham on the 23rd of October 2010.

8. Alex was rewarded for his performances. On the 21st of August 2010 he signed his first professional contract – a three-year deal with the saints. This capped a great two weeks for the player – scoring his first goal for the club, as well as receiving his first official contract.

9. Alex Chamberlain’s dad, Mark Chamberlain, has recently been encouraging his son to follow in Theo Walcott’s footsteps and join Arsenal. He went on record saying: ‘To develop at a place like Arsenal can’t be a bad thing. In my eyes, I’d like him to go there as soon as possible, and continue his development.’

10. Arsenal came really close to signing him in January for £10 million, unfortunately, it never went through.

  • Please arsene wenger should not delay in signing this player because time is a factor

  • Ricky says:

I’m not too sure about this player, I have heard good things but the fact is he was playing in league one and we all know the Premiership is a much better league. Wenger needs experienced and talented players and unfortunately he does not fit the bill.

Of course he could be good for Arsenal and could develop into a good player. The only problem with that is we need players for now, not players for the future.
