Patrick Vieira believes Arsenal’s weak mentality could lead to player revolt

|

‘How many years has it been since you’ve won a trophy?’ I bet you hear that quite a lot from rival fans, I know I do. However, did you ever think that these words would have ever come out of the legendary Patrick Vieira’s mouth?

Well it seems that the French midfielder also thinks that this trophy drought is affecting Arsenal fans and players alike, especially our key men Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie.

The lack of silverware might present doubts over both players sticking with Arsenal. As we all know, Fabregas is already been tipped with a potential move to Barcelona, whilst van Persie…well…let’s just hope for the best. Vieira told the Sun:

‘I love watching them play and the Arsenal players are doing the right things but you have to add something to that – notably in physical impact. In my day Adams, Keown, Winterburn or Parlour might have had less quality but they would put their heads where others wouldn’t put their feet.’

The Frenchman added:

‘Arsenal don’t yet have United’s killer mentality. They often need three or four goals to win a match. The problem is the important players like Fabregas and Van Persie will end up asking themselves questions.’

You heard the man, guts! That’s what we currently lack in our ranks. You could consider Jack Wilshere, and a small number of other players to be an ideal example of what Vieira is talking about, but ultimately, we desperately lack in this department.

The veteran midfielder also mentioned the weak mentality we currently have as a team. Well, if Manchester United can produce more high quality and enjoyable goals compared to ours, then they would certainly be known as a perfect team. But if you think that we’re even in the same league as the Red Devils just because of that, then think again guys.

Watching them may not be as enjoyable as our beloved Arsenal, but they get the job done. Nobody remembers third place, nor does anybody actually care about second. All eyes are on the summit, and if we continue with this downfall, in terms of trophies, ominous thoughts might flow into our player’s minds this summer.

Vieira is correct, Arsenal have a weak mentality. We lack killer instinct and more importantly we lack phsicality all over the pitch. We have no players who want to put their foot in if things get tough, back in the day we had the likes of Adams, Keown, Palour and so forth who loved putting there foot in, we don’t have any players who do this in the current squad. This will be Arsenal’s down fall this season and possibly future seasons unless they strengthen the squad.

Nothing new being said here, we have all said it for ages. I believe ManUs strength comes from Fergie. AW panders to his “young” team especially Cesc. That is why we have an unbelievable ongoing injury list, you won’t see any of this squad going out strapped up playing through a bit of pain. We are soft and it shows, how it will change I don’t know.

Talking of mental strength it`s high time we stopped treating players like priceless porcelain and over reacting when they have a minor knock. Last night I watched Rugby League from Manly. During the game a Warriors(NZ) player suffered a broken arm. He quietly walked to a chair on the touch line, craddled his arm and watched the rest of the game without any attention whatsoever.
Compare this with Real Madrid v Barcelona, pure theatre. Stretched hamstring, four attendants a stretcher, blanket lots of cuddles and well wishes and a grand exit. Then he gets off the stretcher and walks unaided to his seat in the stands and we talk of mental strength?

Tell you what, I`ve coached rugby and unless players had neck or spinal injuries they would refuse a stretcher it would be too embarrassing in front of a crowd of supporters. Dislocated fingers were common place, the strapper would put them back on the touch line and send the player back on.Sometimes even shoulder dislocations were fixed on site. If you can`t run there`s not much point in being out there but a bit of pain is good for the soul.

does this mean that AW should sign a few rugby players this summer?
