Arsenal’s new boss Unai Emery is keen to bolster the club’s defensive ranks in the market and, having already landed Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus, is closing in on another defender.

The Sun states Arsenal are on the verge of agreeing a deal with Freiburg for Turkey international Caglar Soyuncu, who looks set to move to the Premier League for a reported fee of £35m.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is leading the charge for the 22-year-old and Soyuncu’s agent, Mustafa Dogru, told TurkishFootball that ‘concrete’ talks have been held.

“Mislintat has been keen on Caglar since he was at Borussia Dortmund. He first scouted him back in Germany. Sven is interested in Caglar, there are concrete talks, all that remains if for a free to be agreed. We will see what happens next.”

Arsenal are in need of defensive additions following the retirement of Per Mertesacker, while Laurent Koscielny will miss the start of the new Premier League season with an achilles injury.
