Arsenal are set for wholesale changes this summer, having waved goodbye to Arsene Wenger and Per Mertesacker at the weekend, but significant departures are also expected during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have Santi Cazorla rapidly approaching the end of his contract in north London and, having only just returned from an 18 month absence, are unlikely to offer the Spain international fresh terms – but he could be given the chance to return to his homeland.

Spanish outlet AS state Villarreal have opened the door for the 33-year-old, who has already had two spells with the Yellow Submarines, to return to the club – as long as he can prove his fitness.

Cazorla returned to first-team training last week after a lengthy Achilles problem and has stated his desire to feature for Arsenal before the end of the season, with the Gunners having just two games remaining against Leicester City and Huddersfield Town.
