Arsenal are seeking defensive reinforcements to their side this summer after a poor campaign in the Premier League, which has seen them concede a whopping 51 goals across 37 league matches.
The Gunners are set to see captain Per Mertesacker retire at the end of the campaign, while vice-captain Laurent Koscielny is set to miss the next six months following an achilles injury sustained in last week’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Atletico Madrid.
That’s left Arsenal in the market for a central defender and a respected journalist has revealed that the Gunners are in the chase for Ajax’s highly-rated youngster Matthijs de Ligt, who is reported to have handed in a transfer request to the Eredivisie giants.

De Ligt’s services are highly sought after, with Manchester City, Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Barcelona all attributed with an interest in the Holland international, but Kike Marin has added Arsenal’s name to the mix.
Marin may be remembered by Arsenal fans for calling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s club-record move to the Emirates Stadium from Borussia Dortmund in January way before the deal was confirmed on Deadline Day.
