Arsenal are seeking a wealth of improvements to their side this summer and focus is likely to be orientated around rebuilding the defence, which has struggled this season – conceding a whopping 51 goals in the Premier League.
Per Mertesacker’s imminent retirement, along with the long-term injury suffered by Laurent Koscielny, has left the Gunners with holes to fill in their side and the north London outfit have been eyeing a talented player on the continent.
However, The Guardian states Arsenal could be set for disappointment in their chase to land Porto’s highly-rated 19-year-old central defender Diogo Leite, as it’s claimed that Champions League finalists Liverpool lead the chase.
Leite has excelled for Porto’s B team this season and his release clause is set at a lowly €15m, which makes him an easily achievable target for Premier League giants, but Liverpool are currently the most likely to land the teenager’s signature.
Jurgen Klopp’s plan is to send the young defender on-loan next season to ensure he earns first-team football, which may be key to negotiating a deal.
