Watford have beaten Arsenal, Tottenham and a number of other clubs to the signing of Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot, reports the Sun.

The Gunners are said to have had a £1m bid turned down for the England Under 19 international, but the Hornets have had a £1.5m offer accepted for the the centre back.

Wilmot has been scouted by a whole host of Premier League teams with Stevenage chairman Ben Wallace confirming that Liverpool were among four top division clubs having scouted the defender in recent months.

The centre half made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy match against MK Dons in late October, and has gone on to make 15 appearances for the League Two outfit this campaign.

Despite playing for a team in the fourth tier, he was given his first England cap at under 19 level last month, coming on as a late substitute against Latvia in a 2-0 win. However, his first start at international level was an unhappy one as he played the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Macedonia.
