Newcastle could beat the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United to the signing of Red Bull Salzburg striker Dimitri Oberlin, according to the Sun.
The 20 year old is currently on loan at Basel, and has impressed with his performances in the Champions League, scoring four goals in six group matches, helping the Swiss champions to the last 16 of the competition.
Oberlin’s pace, and finishing ability have made him a target for Europe’s top clubs TMW reports, with the Gunners being joined by the likes of Juventus, Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Napoli and United in pursuing the forward.
Basel do actually have an option to buy Oberlin at the end of the season so the Sun‘s report does seem pretty speculative. They say that the Magpies could offer in the region of £20million for the striker, and cut his loan spell short in the process. Considering Rafa Benitez’s side is in the middle of a takeover, scraping together such funds won’t be easy, and it seems the sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic will be needed for a bid to be made.
