In a surprise twist, it looks like there is a growing possibility that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil could sign a new contract to stay at the Emirates.
Speculation in recent weeks has centred around the interest in the German international from the likes of Inter Milan and Manchester United with the 28 year old’s contract expiring at the end of the season.
The comments from Ozil’s representative Erkut Sogut on Wednesday however, seem to suggest that Ozil could yet sign on the dotted line, with negotiations between the two sides progressing well:
“Ozil wants to play another two to three years in the Premier League. Our contacts with Arsenal continue and are going in a positive way.”
Much has been made about Ozil’s demand for £330,000 a week from the Gunners. The German reportedly rejected a £250,000 a week deal in the summer, but it seems that a lack of interest from other teams in matching his salary expectations may have prompted the midfielder into reconsidering the proposal on the table from Arsenal.
Here is some reaction from Arsenal fans on Twitter to the possibility of Ozil staying at the club:
Finally some good news ,I guess the United rumour made Arsenal up their game

@Arsenal – Personally I would sell @Alexis_Sanchez and @MesutOzil1088 . Both demotivated Mercenaries. Ozil cannot defend. #wasteoftime
