Arsenal winger Joel Campbell will return to the Gunners after Sporting Lisbon decided against signing the Costa Rican international on a permanent deal, according to A Bola.

The 24 year old has been on loan in Portugal since the start of the season but the Portuguese newspaper reports that he hasn’t done have enough to convince manager Jorge Jesus to exercise their purchase option. This campaign Campbell made 28 appearances in all competitions but only made 11 starts, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Since moving to the Emirates from Saprissa in 2011 for £850,000, the talented winger has been loaned out to five different clubs including Lorient, Real Betis, Olympiakos, Villarreal and Sporting but he has never managed to breakthrough at the Gunners after making 40 appearances for the first team.

He has a year left on his current contract with Arsenal and it is likely he will be sold this summer before he can leave on a free transfer in 12 months time.
