According to reports in Spain, Pep Guardiola was set to replace Arsene Wenger last year before the Frenchman personally blocked the club’s approach for the Spaniard.

With the then-Bayern Munich manager set to leave the German club, the Arsenal board allegedly spoke to Wenger about an early exit in order to bring in Guardiola, claim Sport.

However, it is believed Wenger personally blocked the approach as he wanted to see out the remainder of his contract at the time and also told the board that he still has a lot to give to the club.

Guardiola has always spoken highly of Arsenal football club to a point that he was being mooted to replace Wenger before he decided to take charge of Bayern Munich.

Of course, Guardiola eventually took charge of Manchester City after leaving Bayern, while Wenger continues his role at Arsenal.

A chance missed by Arsenal in hindsight, and if this report is too be believed, then it is a clear indication that Wenger holds the key to the club.
