Arsenal and any other interested club will have to pay William Carvalho’s £38 million buyout clause if they want to sign him in the January transfer window, according to Abola.

The Portuguese newspaper reports that Carvalho’s club Sporting Lisbon are extremely reluctant to allow the 24-year- old to leave next month unless they receive a huge bid or if they fall further behind in the race to secure a Champions League place.

Sporting currently sit fourth in the league behind Braga in third who hold the final Champions League position. They are two points behind at the moment, but if there is a risk of missing out on the competition next season, they will have to sell Carvalho either in January or in the summer.

Sport Witness (via TeamTalk) reported yesterday that Carvalho was being scouted at Sporting’s match against Belenenses last Thursday by the Gunners, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. Whether Arsenal need another holding midfielder though is certainly debatable.
