Arsenal have signed up Emiliano Martinez to a new long-term contact at the Emirates.

The 24-year-old Argentine goalkeeper has been with Arsenal since joining their academy six-years ago, and has featured in both EFL cup games so far this season.

Martinez is the third-choice goalkeeper at the Emirates, behind Petr Cech and David Ospina. But despite being limited to 10 first-team appearances, the Argentine has decided to extend his stay in north London.

Martinez has developed his progress throughout the years with loan spells at Oxford, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham and Wolves, where he made a total of 33 outings.

Arsene Wenger is pleased with the Argentina Under-20 international’s progression and believes he is a big future ahead of him at Arsenal:

‘If you look at him, I personally see all the top qualities that a goalkeeper needs.

‘He has the stature, he has the passion, he has the technical quality, he has the decision-making, he has huge power and he’s not frightened of anything.’

Martinez is highly likely to start against Southampton next week in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

He does look a very good goalkeeper, but unfortunately, he has Cech and Ospina in front of him in the pecking order at Arsenal.

Hopefully he doesn’t grow frustrated, but signing a new long-term deal is positive news for the Gunners.
