Valencia central defender Shkodran Mustafi wants to move to Arsenal and a deal is close, according to Sky Sports.

The Gunners are on their last legs in defence due to injuries to a number of key players, which has weakened Arsene Wenger’s side considerably.

Both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are currently on the sidelines while Laurent Koscielny is still not match fit after a prolonged absence following participation in Euro 2016.

This meant that young duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding were deployed at centre-half in the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.

Talk of Mustafi’s addition has been gathering pace over recent weeks, with the World Cup winner seen as an ideal addition to Wenger’s squad.

The latest report suggests that the former Sampdoria stalwart is keen on a switch to North London and as such the Gunners are likely to land him before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
