Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been singing the praises of new signing Rob Holding and is considering starting the young defender in the club’s Premier League opener against Liverpool according to The London Evening Standard.

The Gunners are facing something of a defensive crisis with the new campaign only a couple of weeks away, with Per Mertesacker suffering a serious knee injury and set to be sidelined for a number of months.

The German is joined on the sidelines by Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel currently, with talk that the North London club will sign a new centre-half before the season starts as cover.

Holding moved to the Emirates Stadium from Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer after impressing in the Championship last term.

The versatile enforcer has been playing for his new club in pre-season and scored in a recent friendly win.

As such, Holding’s impressive introduction could well see Wenger give him the nod when Liverpool visit the Emirates on the first day of the new campaign.
