Arsenal are the latest Premier League club to be linked with Southampton centre-half Jose Fonte, with ESPN claiming that the Gunners are weighing up a move for the Portugal international.

The North London side are down to their bare bones in defence, with Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista set for lengthy spells on the sidelines after pre-season injuries.

This resulted in Calum Chambers and new man Rob Holding getting the nod to start against Liverpool in the club’s Premier League opener, which resulted in a 4-3 defeat.

Fonte has impressed over a number of years at the St Mary’s Stadium and was part of the Portugal team that won Euro 2016 over the summer in France.

Manchester United are also thought to be interested in the veteran, who has stalled on a new deal at the south coast club.

Fonte could represent a shrewd acquisition for Arsene Wenger’s men given his experience in English football and considerable abilities.
