Arsenal are keeping their defensive options open and are considering two centre-halves other than Shkodran Mustafi just in case a move for the Valencia star falls through, Sky Sports claim.

The Gunners are short of experienced options at the heart of their rearguard currently due to injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

As such, inexperienced pair Calum Chambers and Rob Holding were deployed against Liverpool and the North London side conceded four goals in the process of defeat.

Mustafi is said to be Arsene Wenger’s top transfer priority this summer but talks have stalled and the clubs are at a stand-off over the fee.

The latest report suggests that Arsenal are considering moves for both Omer Toprak of Bayer Leverkusen and Simon Kjaer of Fenerbahce as the Emirates Stadium side look to add a new defender to their ranks before the end of August.

Both are international players of considerable experience and would represent solid options if a deal for Mustafi does not materialise.
