Charlie Adam has admitted that he is surprised that Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy did not take the opportunity to move to Arsenal earlier this summer.

The Gunners made an approach for the record-breaking attacker before Euro 2016, with the forward having a release clause in his contract at the King Power Stadium.

However, despite Vardy having every right to talk to Arsenal over a potential switch to the Emirates Stadium, the former non league star opted to stay with the Foxes and signed a new deal with the current Premier League champions.

Adam, who had a stint at Liverpool but failed to make a lasting impression, has stated that when a top club comes knocking players are foolish to reject the chance to make a move.

“I’m surprised when I see he [Vardy] was going to stay, I can see his point where he shows a bit of loyalty to the club and he’s obviously won the title,” the Scotland international told BBC Sport.

“These opportunities don’t come around very often, where you get one chance to get into the so-called big clubs in the Premier League.

“You know he’s 29, for me should have went and seen it out for the next couple of years and try and challenge for the title.

“I would have gone, if I had the opportunity to go to a club like Arsenal, but he’s obviously made his decision but it’s a great signing for Leicester.

“But to get the opportunity to sign for one of the big clubs is very difficult to turn down.”

Since being rejected by Vardy, Arsenal have been linked with a host of other centre forwards and it appears that a new face to provide competition to Olivier Giroud will be signed this summer.
