Could this be his season to shine?

Joel CampbellSo Arsene Wenger didn’t sign a top striker, nor did he sign a defensive midfielder. But he did manage to sign one hell of a goalkeeper in Petr Cech.

The decision not to sign a world-class forward, however, has mystified not only the Arsenal faithful, but former players and pundits alike – even more so after learning the Gunners will be without Danny Welbeck until Christmas!

But we all must get over it as it is what it is, and our squad will have to maintain their pace in the Premier League up until January at least – where we will be able to add reinforcements.

But while we will all bemoan Wenger’s decision not to sign a striker, could the Frenchman have an ace in his pocket? I am of course talking about Joel Campbell – Arsenal’s loss as it were this summer, could well be his gain.

The 23-year-old Costa Rican forward was expected to leave the club on loan this season, having been linked with a few clubs from around Europe, but he remained at the Emirates, with many asking ‘why?’ (Including myself).

Since arriving from Deportivo Saprissa in 2011, Campbell has only featured nine times for the club and spent the majority of his time on loan.

However, this could be his season to shine and prove to Wenger that he deserves to be at the club – but providing the Frenchman gives him a chance of course.

We all know all Campbell’s ability and potential, just look how he performed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for Costa Rica, the guy has got it. But his failure to cement a regular role in Wenger’s side has hindered him, thus being overlooked.

Despite this, Wenger sees star quality in Campbell, hence why the boss wanted to tie him down to a new deal before sending him out on loan last season to Villarreal.

Yes, Campbell is not the top striker we were craving this summer, but given the chance, I truly believe he could add something to this team and help the side be in touching distance with our Premier League rivals at least until January – which is when we could do some business to strengthen the squad.
