Will Arsenal need more than Suarez to challenge for silverware?

Arsene WengerWith a little over a month left until the summer transfer window slams shut, Arsenal are yet to make a marquee signing, with future prospect Yaya Sanogo being the only incoming (free) transfer acquired as of yet.

We have been strongly linked with one world class player as of late – Luis Suarez. His ability and presence on the field is no doubt right up there with the best of them – though he is full of moments that leave managers and fans in a state of disbelief.

But if we do sign the 26-year-old striker will it be enough to help end our trophy drought which has now been stretched to eight seasons? Absolutely not. Our squad isn’t good enough to challenge for any title(s), even if we do sign Suarez. I believe we will still need to require three, maybe four quality signings in order to mount a serious challenge on silverware this season.

I reckon we’re in need of a strong holding midfielder, solid centre-back and a goalkeeper of top quality to really be considered as contenders this season. Our squad does have some very good players already, but then again the same can be said about the large number of fairly average players who feature on a regular basis.

We’ve limped into a top four finish the past few seasons, so the need for quality is clearly evident. But all we can do now is hope and wait for Arsene Wenger to pull a few strings before the transfer window closes.

But the Frenchman shouldn’t pin all his hopes of landing just Suarez. More players will need to come in.

we could scrape the league cup with this squad if they really tried, other than that no

followed on: chance of winning the PL. If we get suarez (and he doesn’t get banned)plus a few others(DM & CB), we could challenge for 3rd in PL and maybe win the FACup

Arsenal fc need more than suarez to mount cup contenders.we need mielfider, defender and keeper. Only suarez can’t do it for us

I really don’t understand why the “easy to make” signings have been ignored! Remy is a good Arsenal type striker and reminds me a lot of Henry himself, QPR being a relegated outfit surely it wouldn’t cost much nor would it be a massive risk it terms of quality since he proved what he can do. Julio Ceasar is another obvious one. A defender who can play at least 2 out of the possible 4 positions defensivley like Abate/Caseres/ Lienchtiner (excuse the spelling). None of these would break the bank and do a good job adding to the squads strength and depth. Then we could start looking at a “marquee” signing or not it wouldn’t matter! What about Kevin Prince Boateng. It seems all eggs have been put in one basket, unless Arsene does his usual “by the way I’ve signed this guy” press confrence. We shall see I suppose.

Of course Suarez would make a big difference. With Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla having a year under their belt, on our day, with our best team, we could compete with the best of them. Our problem runs deep, though. If you look at the first team squad on Arsenal.com it is clear that our squad is woefully undermanned. We don’t have enough bodies. We know that Diaby, Frimpong, are injury prone in a major way. Chamakh, Bendtner, Park, Gervinho and Campbell will not be around, even though they are listed in the first team squad to fill numbers. Miachi and Sanogo are unknown and risky. That leaves 18 players. So including Sanogo we have 19 players up to the quality needed for a full season. On the basis that we could easily play 60 games this season (not including international games the players will play) it works out at nearly 40 games a player. With injuries and suspensions it’s just too much to ask. Even if we were fortunate enough to get a quality player like Suarez we would not have enough bodies. About another three players would be needed to make a squad able to cope with the season and have some success. I am afraid without some signings we may well be out the frame early in the season and almost certainly by the January transfer window. Wenger must be aware of this so I assume he will make some signings. If he didn’t then I’m afraid he would be totally negligent.

A lot more, if we somehow manage to nab Suarez all it will do is ensure top 4, but we will still be well behind the big 3.

I don’t have the faith that wenger will strengthen the squad correctly, he doesn’t have a great record of buying top top quality, although cazorla and giroud are doing quite well.

buying suarez is a massive gamble at £20m let alone £40m, he could let us down and want to leave at any minute.

    Higuain was the man

wenger pls. Stop lie for us because u say u spend 100m this summer but now u can`t buy anyboby where is the money?

Wenger’s side needs more than Luis Suarez to have any chance of challenging Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs. Besides Suarez, the very least another central holding midfielder in the likes of Fellaini. This is the minimum requirement that Wenger must sign this summer to have any chance of mounting a title charge this coming season.

Given Wenger’s frugality in the transfer market, the above two signings is considered a bonus for the Arsenal fans. Based on the fact that the Arsenal had disposed most of their so called deadwoods (with the exception of Bendtner, Chamakh and Park), it looked as if they are making way for the elites. Most likely, Bendtner and Chamakh will be sent on loan or sold by the end of this transfer window. As for Park, it seemed very mystifying that he is now back in South Korea serving national service. Thus, he is expected to be on Arsenal’s wage bill at least after this year.

It seemed that the Arsenal are looking at the prospect of signing Suarez (as their number one priority) and probably a holding midfielder may follow suit. At the very most another custodian may be signed. The likelihood of them signing another center back is virtually out of the question as Wenger has revealed that Sagna will be utilized as a make shift center back if required. This basically has completely played down any possibility of them signing any center back.

Cheer up lads. The form in the second half of last season was as good as any team in the world. Adding a world class striker to that squad would make Arsenal contenders.

  • ngeno says:

wenger is not going to spend even a pound. Trophy drought again and finish the season at 5th place.
