‘I’m not expecting any marquee signings at Arsenal’

|

Arsene WengerArsene Wenger shouldn’t be handed a substantial warchest to utilize this summer as he will simply waste it. This is what former Gunner Stewart Robson believes.

As we are aware, or been told even, Wenger will be given at least £70 million to spend this summer in order to challenge for silverware next season.

While many believe the Frenchman will spend and acquire top quality players, Robson begs to differ, claiming Wenger’s previous buys have been woeful and expects more of the same this summer:

‘I’m not expecting any marquee signings at Arsenal.

‘There’s a lot of talk about it but I don’t know if I would trust Arsene Wenger with that money.

‘Over the last few years some of the players that he’s said were going to be world class haven’t ended up like that.

‘People like Olivier Giroud, Philippe Senderos, Denilson, Marouane Chamakh, Armand Traore, Sebastien Squillaci, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Emmanuel Eboue, Park Chu-Young, Lukasz Fabianskii, Gervinho and Andre Santos.’

He went on to say:

‘These are the sort of players who Arsene Wenger said were going to be world class players and they haven’t done it.

‘Over the last two seasons they have spent some money on Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski, Mikel Arteta, Nacho Monreal, Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos. They haven’t been top class players.

‘Arsene Wenger doesn’t appear to want to sign the top class players, or what other people would describe as top class players. He goes out and says, ‘I can buy you cheaper players for a better price who are going to be world class players in the future’ but that hasn’t been the case in the last few years.

‘Some of the players who he has bought have regressed under him like Andrey Arshavin and Thomas Vermaelen. Nacho Monreal hasn’t been a good signing and Andre Santos has been hopeless for them.

‘Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski are past their best and Gervinho is another player who they spent a lot of money on and hasn’t really come to the fore.’

In a way, Robson has a point – Wenger has been unable to sign top quality players over recent seasons. Just look at the list of players above. Are any of them decent enough to play for Arsenal?

Arteta, Vermaelen and Giroud have been decent signings but they aren’t exactly world-beaters.

This summer seems different however, and I think Wenger will spend big on big players (hopefully he does). If he does this then I believe we will be challenging for silverware next season. If he doesn’t, after the club made major profits and signed new sponsorship deals, then we can all firmly point the finger of blame at Wenger for not bringing in top quality footballers to our club.

Robson is a nonce. He loses all credibility based on how bitter he is towards his former club.

    • Thom says:

There is a certain irony in claiming someone loses credibility over a valid point by labelling them a ‘nonce’.

  • rellends says:

to be fair to wenger i can’t remember him saying any of the above dross would turn into world class players. denilson started off well but never developed. i believe most top clubs in europe were after senderos. plus, i don’t think anyone can say that monreal isn’t decent. he’s a very bitter man and the fact that the only place where he seems to be able to air his views is talksport. say no more.

  • Bob A says:

It is very notable he picked out the average buys only, what about
Cazorla,RVB,Fabregas,Herny.Vierra, etc the list goes on. Robson was not in the top league of players and he is just a sorry, bitter old man

  • jordangooner says:

Robson is a bitter little man, since he was sacked by Arsenal TV. Whilst Wenger has made some poor buys. He also signed Fabregas,Henry, Vieira, Petit, Van Persie, Nasri, Anelka, Cazorla,Flamini, Giberto, Clichy, Toure ,lumberg,Poldolski,Arteta,Walcott, The Ox to name a few!! Wenger can not lesrn much from Robson!!!

  • Bullshit says:

What the hell is he talking about? Nacho has been excellent for us the time Gibbs was out. Wenger never said that all these players would be top class players. Mertesacker is one of the most important players in Arsenal. He and Kos has been so good this season.

Stewart Robson doesn’t know what he is talking about. What a tragedy.

  • JohnnyG says:

Just to clarify one thing; you’ve added first names but Robson only used surnames so I’m pretty sure he actually said Djourou not Giroud (in any case I think he’d probably pronounce the latter jirood). He’s so far beneath contempt that it’s surprising you bothered to post his dross – doing so undermines your credibility.

  • graham says:

what up with robson I take it he has got a big chip on his shoulder he wasn’t world class if fact I would say that monreal is better than him so robson if you have not constructive to say about ARSENAL then keep your gob shut as all that is coming out of it is a lot of bullshit and jealousy

  • RealG says:

why are you even reporting was this idiot says??? its the same as reporting what piers morgan tweets!! not sure if your website does that aswell but seen his tweets on similar arsenal blogs!! people like that no nothing about arsenal!! or wenger! they are bitter and twisted and deluded!! and you agree with them?? lol! so gunnersphere, you must be an idiot too!! pathetic!!!

  • Someone Else says:

    Robson’s opinions are best ignored.

  • rizal says:

Any word come out from Robson regarding Arsenal is certain to be entrails with hatred and bitter-ment and not a clear judgment. Plus name me one manager who would have to buy on budget price level at the same time the player is expected to be big a year after – tell me who ?. Sir Furgies had try this policy/road and fail miserably (during the time when he buy Djemba Djamba etc)- he abandon this policy within 1-2 years – why ? because ManU have the money to spend big, but not Arsenal which have to give priority to financing the stadium first. Everybody know that those who buy Bale surely he would deliver it, so does RVP,Robben,Ageouro, etc
