Arsenal legend urges Wenger to sign these two Premier League stars

So with only two days to go until the summer transfer window shuts for yet another season, two goalless draws and the sales of both Robin van Persie and Alex Song to Manchester United and Barcelona respectively, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Arsene Wenger to open his cheque book and sign at least two players.

Wright, who won five major trophies with the Gunners during 1991-98, believes his old club must replace Van Persie and Song with Jermain Defoe and Yohan Cabaye, as he thinks the Spurs striker is one of the finest finishers around and would be ‘the perfect replacement’ for the Dutchman, while the Newcastle midfielder would ‘fit in very nicely’ at The Emirates.

Quoted recently in The Sun, Wright said:

‘TWO games and no goals show where Arsenal’s problems lie and there are few better finishers around than Jermain Defoe.

‘I’m sure Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud will get goals for the Gunners once they have picked up the pace of the Premier League.

‘But Arsenal cannot afford another dodgy start to a campaign after playing catch-up for all of last season.

‘So if I was Arsene Wenger, I would make an audacious bid for Defoe, whose face doesn’t seem to fit at Spurs and who looks up for a move.

‘Defoe would be the perfect replacement for Robin van Persie, the penalty box predator to finish off all those half-chances which are currently going begging.’

He went on to say:

‘The good news is Arsenal seem a little more solid at the back since Steve Bould was promoted to Arsene’s No 2 and they should be OK once Laurent Koscielny is back alongside Thomas Vermaelen.

‘But they could do with another central midfielder after selling Alex Song to Barcelona and I could see Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye fitting in very nicely.’

I do agree with Wrighty on Cabaye. I also think he would suit our style of play and would settle in our team very easily because of it.

The 26-year-old has great technique and managed to bag four goals and seven assists last season. In addition, he also has Premier League experience which means he won’t need time to adapt to the English game.

Defoe on the other hand, I’m undecided.

He is a proven goal scorer, but if he can’t get a sniff in at Spurs what chance has he got at Arsenal? Besides, we already have Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski, so I don’t expect to see another striker come in this summer.

i wouldnt have either but we need a definsive mid and a striker in an ideal world that for me would be falcao and schwienstiger but i know we would nor=t have a hope of signing them so plan B should be Bojan Kircich (spelling not my strong suit)and Nigel de jong they would be more in our budget why is it Arsenal always seem to be two or three great players away from a title winning team.

you are on point Wright…Cabaye is a good player and has qualities in Him…Defoe also can score…we need a finisher with our style of play..

  • Utd111 says:

Anyone wanting Cabaye from United will be skinned alive by Mike Ashley – remember Liverpool & Carroll?
To be honest though I think if Cabaye leaves he will want to go to a club that looks likely to win trophies.
    That’s not Arsenal!

We do need to consider some homegrown players especially if we lose walcott bendtner and may be eastmond. at present all 3 are classed as homegrown where we are bang on our 8 player limit. we are also bang on our 17 non-homegrown limit. so the likes of squillaci park chamakh and arshavin really need new homes. you cant see any of the other 13 non-homegrown players leaving or any of the other 5 homegrown

in my opinion we need a proven premier league goal scorer in difficullt situations, javier hernandez would do for me, with a french midfielder like mvilla, we would be complete, though we would need a versatile winger as well, walcott has failed!

I never understand Wenger nor the board. No day a Arsenal fan open a site to see development on the club that u will not be sad wt what u’ll see. When other clubs a recruiting, building their club we keep selling our best and leave out the dead legs at the end the prof will claim we don’t need a replacement after all we have this and that in our team to replace. I’m a lover of Wenger but this policy may not lead us anywhere in future. When other big clubs see our team a place to pick players to build their team and we keep recruiting for them. Pls this has to stop. Mr. Wenger, if is the board that is giving u problem, pls speak out. thx
