Was he brought in to replace or support RVP?

|

Robin van Persie has yet to agree a new deal at Arsenal, but the Dutchman has, in the past, declared that he will sit down with Arsene Wenger and discuss his future at the end of the season. Wenger himself remains confident and hopeful that the 28-year-old will sign a new long-term contract before the start of Euro 2012, and of course every single Arsenal fan (including myself) will be praying that our captain and talisman remains a Gunner beyond the following summer.

Meanwhile, Lukas Podolski’s transfer from FC Koln was confirmed last week and as such will feature for Arsenal next season.

But was the 26-year-old German international brought to replace or support RVP? Well obviously we all hope it was for the latter of the two options. However, the very early acquisition by Wenger makes me think Le Boss is thinking about life without Robin next season.

Undoubtedly Podolski and Van Persie upfront would be unbelievable to witness as an Arsenal follower, especially considering that the former has netted 18 in 27 Bundesliga matches, while the latter has scored 30 in 37 Premier League games. It would be a strike partnership for the ages, one, in my opinion, which would be destructive to opposition sides and perhaps could eventually emulate that of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.

However, will RVP remain a Gunner at the end of the summer? I hope so, but I believe this solely depends on our club qualifying for the Champions League next season. Our recent 3-3 draw has set us back in our quest for this and undoubtedly put us in a very precarious position, which is not good at all. We have no control over our destiny and this is worrying, and results like this could play a part in Van Persie’s decision to leave Arsenal.

In any case, I’m very happy that we’ve acquired Podolski for around £10 million, as I am a keen admirer of the German forward, and should RVP decide to call it quits then we already have a great replacement on our hands.

What do you guys reckon – Was Podolski brought in to replace or support RVP?

I am undecided on whether Podolski is a replacement or not. Having said that if Real Madrid offered Higuain plus cash for RVP, I would take it. While it would be great to see RVP stay, no player is biger than the club (yes, cliched I know).

I would like to ake the opportunity to say that what truly scares and saddens me is that there some erstwhile fans who have let their dislike of Wenger morph into outright hatred and consequently they would sooner see the club fail than have some success under Wenger. Case in point:

“Club definitely needs new direction and we are all fed up with sub par performances, but come on guys lets not wish ourselves out of champions league football and be happy for the board to sell our best players (as they don’t need much encouragement).

It would be very hard to get back into the top four if we drop out, don’t think anybody really wants that do they?

I’ll take it if it means the end of Wenger.”

Those fans at the Emirates on Saturday, who failed to support the team throughout the game, do not deserve the lifeline to the CL, we have been given after today’s results.
Next week’s battle with WBA now takes on a vital appearance as our destiny is once again back in our own hands.
Forget for the moment whether or not Van Persie will be an Arsenal player next term……the team needs 100% support in our final game. No booing, abuse or exasperating groans. We’ve been given
an unexpected chance….don’t let’s muck it up.

It’s now time to stick to our best players inorder to compete with others, other clubs are taking advantage of our poor policy of allowing our great players enter their final years without offering new contracts to them, our board should not put profits first and ignore teams perfomance by selling most of our important players. E.g. tottenham managed to keep modric and they’ve done well. We should also cut our revenues by offloading lazy players and pay the rest high wages than we are paying now, and am sure we’re the least paying club in top four which is very dangerous in our modern football.

If sagna frimpong and diaby are too miss the start of the season these are the 3 positions we must target next. for me that means van der weil mvila and dempsey after that cb and cf which for me means vertonghen and huntelaar. If we could land those 5 i would be more than happy. i would also like to see us get a couple of freebies like adler and hoilett.
