Good cover option, but not the man we really need

Aleksandar Dragovic has revealed that seven clubs, which include Arsenal, Inter, Dortmund and Marseille, are interested in his services and according to the best online sportsbooks the Gunners are in with a real chance of getting him.

Barcelona were understood to be keen on the Basel defender, but the 21-year-old quashed these rumours recently, telling Kurier:

‘On the names of the clubs there is some truth. With the exception of Barcelona.

‘There are seven teams interested, two of which are from Russia. They would be very financially lucrative, but I am not looking for the most money.’

Contracted to Basel until 2015, Dragovic explains what would tempt him away from the Swiss club:

‘My contract runs until 2015, so if a club wants me, they’ll have to put a bit of money on the table.

‘Also I feel very comfortable here and in 18 months here I have developed twice as much as I could have done in Austria.

‘The club must at least be represented in the Europa League. For with Basel I have the chance to play in the Champions League.’

Well Arsenal certainly fits Dragovic’s criteria as it were, but should we make it out top priority to snap up this youngster?

I think he would make a good cover option, but I’d rather the club step up their pursuit of Ajax centre-back Jan Vertonghen, as he has played with Thomas Vermaelen in the past and would also offer better competition to our current defenders.

Dragovic still needs to prove himself in my opinion. The Swiss league is not exactly a very competitive one.

Perhaps a move to the likes of Dortmund or Marseille would be best for him at this stage of his career, as I believe, due to the number of defenders we currently have, he will struggle to get games at our club.

Since Arsenal’s last league title in 2003-04 season , they have finished the combined total of 104 points behind the league winners. That’s an average of 15 points per season less than eventual champions and some seasons as bad as 21 and 24 points less than that year’s champs. Clearly we haven’t been competitive ( apart from 2008 season , 4 points behind ) with the league’s elites and to change that Arsenal need to bring in players of higher quality than Dragovic, players who can help this club on day one.
