So it seems that Arsenal and Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen has announced that he’s fully prepared to join the Gunners if Spurs cannot agree a deal – news that will both please and frustrate some Gooners.

It appears the deal is currently failing due to the agreement of the transfer fee, as Ajax are thought to want £12 million for the Belgium’s services, while Spurs are only prepared currently to pay £9 million.

Vertonghen recently said:

‘I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed.

‘They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday. But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through, as Ajax are asking £12m for me.’

Now I am a bit p***ed off about this to be honest, either he wants to join us or he doesn’t, there seems to be one or two players currently (Eden Hazard) who think the whole transfer system is a joke, and they can just sit there and announce whatever they like to clubs.

Vertonghen is a very good player, there is no denying that, but I can’t help but think that his latest comments are somewhat of a slap in the face to Arsenal.

Obviously I am looking at this from a fans perspective, but I’d much prefer a player who wants to play for us as there first choice rather than ‘settling’ for us because his primary option fell through. Although I am sure that given the fact there have been moves like Sol Campbell to Arsenal from Tottenham, I would welcome him, assuming he was going to put in 100% and not just whine about how he didn’t get the move he wanted.

The 25-year-old centre-back is aware that matching Ajax’s demands could be difficult though:

‘That is a lot of money for someone with just a year left on his contract. I’m sure Spurs won’t be able to pay that much after they missed out on the Champions League.

‘Ajax want to get as much as they can for me, while Spurs want to pay as little as possible.

‘I hope a deal can be done. But I won’t fight with Ajax – that is the last thing I’d want after so many good years with them.’

I guess we will have to see what happens with Vertonghen in the upcoming weeks. I personally think that he will end up at Tottenham, but I wouldn’t turn him away from Arsenal as I think he would be a great signing for our club.

No, we’ve never been interested and he’s trying to use our name to clinch the Spurs deal. He is a quality defender and would have been a good addition to the squad with his versatility, but he’s not going to displace Vermaelen and Koscielny has been immense recently. I’d rather a defender that’s capable at both centre back and right back, such as Yanga-Mbiwa, though it looks like he may be heading to the Bundesliga.

  • Wengersacock says:

Of course you would because he is ten times better than anything you have at the moment

    • Steveo says:

Wouldn’t it be choice if this comment came from a follower of the team stuffed with crocks and bottlers ? How ironic…

    • AshburtonMark says:

Mind the gap mate!! Ps No I wouldn’t welcome a player who only has aspirations for the Europa League!

      • DaveYid says:

Just to make a point about your point Markyboy:

“Does it matter that Tottenham are in the Europa League? No, not that much. You don’t just join for one season” – Jan Vertonghen

        • BlueForever says:

To your point I’d say; Spurs weren’t in the Champions League this year either, infact before 2010/2011 it had been some time since they had. Spurs aren’t a champions league side, there are 2 teams in London better than them… Nevermind the BPL.

    • JackFact says:

Deep deep deep down – Vertonghen is DESPERATE to join Arsenal. What top player would EVER want to join a perennial mid-table Europa Cup team who haven’t won a title in their Father’s life-time?

      • JackFact's Mum says:

        Mid-table team? The last 3 seasons they’ve finished 4th, 5th and 4th. Hardly mid-table is it?

Now get back in to bed Jack you naughty boy or mummy will be cross!

        • LFS says:

you’ve said it yourself. just the last 3 seasons, history is a bit more than that.
now, let the adults do the talking.

        • deejay says:

4th, 5th, 6th ? well that covers the last 3 years, now what about the 50 odd years before that ???

  • joey says:

The deal has already been done he is going to Spurs, it was never over the money offered it was down to payment terms. Ajax wanted the bulk of the fee up front, Arsenal offered £7m in total Ajax laughed.

    • Steveo says:

Wow, such knowledge… in-depth, detailed… you are obviously very well connected, Joey.

How do you do it, we gasp ?

Are you that Joey who was on ‘Blue Peter’ ?

      • Robbo says:

Lol. I nearly wet myself at that remark. I bet it was Ernie who typed the comment for him. They would suit Twitchy and co perfectly. Btw, let “vertigo” to Spuds and enjoy the dizzy heights of the Europa League and finishing behind us yet again…… Lol. Joey Deacon, well I never….

        • joey says:

How mature. Nothing about adults nomads acting like 13yr old surprises me these days. Once the deal is done and it all comes out I’ll be the one laughing at you. Shame I had assumed this was an adult forum.

      • chris from Cambridge says:

Steveo it does not sound as though you have much to contribute about anything. Certainly not about Arsenal’s (Wenger’s) negotiations with Ajax. The real trouble is Wenger wants everything so on the cheap … that the story is highly believable. Or must one say nothing against M. Wenger ?

    • JackFact says:

Joey – fountain of knowledge, sage of football, utter knob.

      • Joey says:

Proving my point, simple minded nomad.

        • Robbo says:

What’s with all this “nomad” business Mr Deacon, care to explain?

        • chris from Cambridge says:

Forget all these nonsense insults which add nothing. If the £7m is true (which would not suprise me of M. Wenger) then Ajax had a right to laugh.

      • chris from Cambridge says:

Well JackFact …. what’s your take on why Vertonghen suddenly switched ambition from Arsenal to Spurs ?
Or are you capable of little more than calling others a knob ??

  • Exo says:

He was told by his agent we were not after him in January. Trying to endear himself to those gullible mugs down the road. Don’t end up like them mate

  • Darren says:

or the record, that quote about Arsenal was old and mixed with some new ones by the Daily Star.

JV will be announced a Spurs player before the weekend.

  • Mark says:

He didn’t say it. The press made it up. Can’t you people get a life. Why does anybody with an IQ above 10 believe any of this nonsense.

  • tonko says:

JV Sounds like a sensible lad, gooners now being a selling club

    • Robbo says:

Even if we are a selling club we still consistently finish higher in the league than you lot……

      • tim says:

yeah by one point, and you only got enough points, because martin flop, had a dubious game, to give you enough points.
get real arsenal fans, you have been caught, and now we will surpass you, we will have our state of the art stadium soon, to go along with our state of the art training complex, the best in england, by the way, so whats not to love at spurs, better than the library.

        • BlackHat83 says:

What an utterly deluded Spud mug you are. It doesn’t matter how many points it took, nobody remembers the margin they remember the finish. Let’s not forget also that we caught 12 points on you in a matter of a few months and ALL OF THIS whilst losing Fabregas and Nasri at the start of the season and being told we were finished. Yeah, finished above you, as always.

          So jog on you mug.

Oh and btw, swanky stadiums and hi tech training facilities don’t win you games you retarded cockslap. A good team without bottlers and pretenders is what gets you a top 3 finish…. So you lot are fucked yet again.

  • Phil C says:

We don’t need this one. Bartley is coming back and is worth a try, and with Per, Coz and Vermaelen plus Song at a push and Miquel we’ve got cover. We may still even have Djourou and Squillachi. We don’t need anyone who’d rather be a spud.

  • Wayne says:

I wouldn’t listen to what the papers say. And if he was to go to the Spuds I’m sure he will eventually realise he’s made a mistake. And I’m sure he would prefer champions league football. Just wait and see what happens when the transfer window opens. He’s only got to look at the clubs records and see who the best choice would be. When did the Spuds win the league last. I even bet a few of the big names will leave Spurs as they want champions league not Europa. If it was true that Wenger offered £7 million that I could believe as he done it with Cahill and Bolton and eventually went to Chelski for £7 million lol.

    • chris from Cambridge says:

Wenger copped a strop because the Bolton chairman went public with the negotiations … ie. Arsenal offering peanuts. That may have made Wenger feel good but has done Arsenal no good at all. We could have had Cahill for similar money to Mertesecker … who must have been class once but can no longer run nor jump.

  • Verminator says:

Tell this prick 2 stay in Holland, any idiot that chooses the plastic, living in the shadow yids over Arsenal is delusional. SO whats he saying?… He wants Europa Leauge football or something?… MUG!
