Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell reckons Robin van Persie will leave the club if Arsene Wenger fails to splash the cash in the market this summer – a view that may divide some Gooners out there.

As we should all know by now our captain’s contract expires at the end of the next season, meaning the club may look to sell the 28-year-old in the summer if he fails to agree a new deal. That or risk losing him on a free the following summer.

But Campbell, who won five major trophies with the Gunners, claims the Dutch striker is likely to leave the club unless it and Wenger shows some ambition and sign some top players.

The 37-year-old said:

‘Van Persie’s had an unbelievable season.

‘Arsenal need a few more players who want to take on the challenge, who are going to say ‘I’m going to make the difference this season’.’

He went on to say:

‘If they don’t buy players he’s going to go, I think he’s going to feel there’s a lack of ambition at the club. Arsenal need a few players who can make the difference, on the field and on the bench.’

To be honest, I agree with Sol. The club must show ambition this summer and sign players that will compliment an already talented squad in order to prove to RVP that this is the place to be. If they don’t then I can see him leaving, and I for one wouldn’t blame him.

Personally, I don’t think RVP is a mercenary, just a player who wants success, and I think it’s about high time that we matched his ambition.

Agree with Sol. If we sign the right players (likes of Vertonghen, M’Vila, Podolski, Hazard, Dempsey), i’m sure he’ll believe we’ve a great chance of winning things and sign a new contract.

Keep hearing about how he’ll leave as he needs to be winning trophies at his age now (agree to an extent as he’s at his peak, though he could easily emulate Bergkamp and stay until he’s 35/36 as his style is not based on pace and athleticism), but where can he go that guarantees trophies? Don’t see him wanting to play in Italy and definitely can’t see him moving to another English club. Not worried about the prospect of Man City moving in for him at all. This year has proved they can’t guarantee winning things and i’m certain he’d rather stay at Arsenal, challenge for some trophies in the upcoming years, win individual accolades and go down in history as an Arsenal Legend and one of the top goalscorers than go to Man City hoping their heavy spending will win a League Title.

Only realistic options that leaves are Real Madrid and Barcelona. As great as he is, he’d be just another player at those clubs and would even face a challenge to play on a weekly basis with the system they play and number of quality attackers both possess.

He loves London, loves the club and is a proud captain. All that’s left is for Wenger to show some ambition this Summer, and i’m confident he will.

What is the problem with these Ex Arsenal players??? Why throw fuel on the fire??? So much for loyalty from Sol, but I think RVP is cut from different cloth. The club has stuck by him during injury plauged seasons and i think he’ll stick by us in return.
As far as lack of ambition goes were it not for the appalling start we’d be right in the title race, and bear in m ind that we didn’t have the “replacement killers” at that time ( bad management yes, lack of ambition no).
a couple of decent players and shedding some of the deadwood and we’ll be right in there next year.
