‘There is still no agreement’

|

Arsene Wenger has recently stated that Arsenal have not yet secured the services of FC Koln forward, despite reports in Germany.

It is thought that the 26-year-old German international has already signed a four-year deal worth £100,000-a-week with the Gunners for a reported fee of £10.9 million.

However, speaking in a press conference ahead of Monday’s game against Newcastle at The Emirates, Wenger said that the proposed transfer of Podolski to Arsenal was not yet a done deal.

Wenger was quoted in the Daily Mirror yesterday saying:

‘I have not a lot to say about that because if we sign a player we will inform you. At the moment we have not signed anybody. There is still no agreement.

‘The distance to the agreement is not always linked with the signing. When you are very close you are quickly very far again, but Podolski is a good player, I wouldn’t deny that.’

But Wenger believes there could be some movement on the matter ‘in the next two or three weeks’.

The Frenchman added:

‘Anything is possible.’

Wenger also insisted that the potential purchase of the German striker will be to compliment Robin van Persie, rather than replace the 28-year-old Dutchman, whose contract expires at the end of next season:

‘Our plan is, and I will not comment further on that, to keep Robin van Persie even if we buy any player.’

Podolski has netted 16 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances for FC Koln this season and has been capped 95 times for Germany, finding the net 43 times, since 2004.
