Why this forgotten Gunner must remain on our books

Abou Diaby has made 109 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal and has netted 14 goals for the club to date. A box-to-box midfielder who is elusive and athletic, a player who can attack and defend and, in my opinion, a player who has been sorely missed. Our very own Yaya Toure.

The 25-year-old has a superb touch on the ball, excellent close control and is also very composed. Though his career has been plagued by a number of injuries which has led to inconsistency and, in some cases, has made him very short tempered and undisciplined at times, Diaby remains one of our top players at the club.

When the French international was fully fit and playing at his best, he drew comparisons to that of Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, which, in my view, is a fair assessment.

As you can probably tell, Diaby is one of my favourite players at Arsenal. One of the players I completely disagree when fans call deadweight and should be offloaded. He is a player that I truly believe we need to give time too. When he fully recovers from his injury, the tall midfielder could prove to be a valuable asset to the team.

I’d like to think of him as a player who might have the same run and effect as Robin van Persie has had on our team, not in terms of goals, but perhaps in assists and dominance in midfield. Diaby has the potential to become a great player for our club, but must be kept fit. If he can avoid picking up injuries and have a good run in the first-team, then I reckon many of those fans calling for him to be sold will reassess their views on him.

Sell some other players in the squad this summer, but Diaby must stay as he has the potential to become an Arsenal great!

Any Gooners out there agree with me?

Diaby should be given the same treatment as Ramsey.

Amen to that, comparing the two is like day and night. Diaby is a supurb mid-field player who creates chances after chances to scor a goal, I wish I could say the same about Ramsey. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ramsey and his energy, I am sure he will one day become a good player in that position. Soccer is a team game, one player could not make miracle, Wenger should put together players that fit together, like playing Rosicky, Diaby and Song together in the mid-field to maximize the teams success.

    Hi,

I too like Diaby a lot, however the ankle that was broken in that horriffic tackle is consistently causing him problems both in itself and further up his leg causing muscle injuries as his body over-compensates.

I think his Arsenal career is effectively over as he will not be able to stay fit at the pace of the Prem.

Love the guy, but he just can’t help us anymore.

Diaby is an outstanding midfielder,he has all the potential to be a great player in arsenal.I call him master dribller.

wenger should never sell him he is very good and he will be great for as very soon when he comes back just watch out for him

Are you kidding me??Diaby is pathetic..He was skillful but at the extent of breaking up the fluidity of an Arsenal move..Often he would go round and round dribbling not knowing what to do..Remember his own goal at Man Utd..Remember against Newcastle 4-4..He plays less than 10 games a season on average..You are stupid to be admiring Diaby..Or maybe you have Wenger’s viewpoint..

    • Blazer says:

If you could not see and admire Diaby’s skill, either you are blind or don’t understand the game. Diaby is one of the best mid-field players in the premier league. If Wenger stick by him, which he should, Diaby will show everyone what he can do on the field.

You must must of been watching a different Diaby than the same one i was watching. He wasnt close to carrying Patrick Viera’s gym bag never mind being on par as him as a player.

    • AfroGunner says:

Funny how we praise Viera for exploits in EPL. ask yourself how well he did in CL. Diaby, Fabregas, Song in CL better arsenal team.

Potentially a great player, terible injury as Wigan gooner says it compromises his whole leg. Wonderful stride, needs work on first touch box to box we have never seen the best of him let us hope for his sake his career is not over.

Diaby did show flashes of something that made those Vieira comparisons valid. Not for a good while now, though. In a team that’s been quite bad when not in possession of the ball he (and Denilson) have been the worst offenders. His awareness and positioning are terrible. The Newcastle match was the last straw for me, IMO he should have been chucked out of the club for that.

I too thing Diaby could be a great player – his health record is so bad however that he is a luxury no team can really afford. If as you say he has made 108 appearances for us over the 6 years he had been at the club, this means he has been paid between £100,000 and £150,000 an appearance!!!
