Arsenal’s hopes of signing German starlet Mario Gotze from Dortmund during the January transfer window have all but faded after the reigning Bundesliga champions revealed that the 19-year-old midfielder will remain at the club for at least another season.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc recently told the press that Gotze’s future is at the German club, at least for another season:

‘We have agreed with Mario that he plays next season in Dortmund.

‘He has the contract to 2014 – we have no reason to sell him. But I am not a prophet. If tomorrow someone offers one billion euros, then you should think about it.’

So it appears Arsene Wenger, who is known to be a keen admirer of Gotze and was rumoured to have launched a failed bid to sign him on the last day of the summer 2011 transfer window, may have to wait a little while longer to acquire his prime target. Then again, will the Frenchman’s firm interest still be there after the end of the 2012/13 season? Who knows…

Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid have also been linked with the Dortmund ace in recent weeks – guess they will be disappointed to hear this news as well.
