Why I totally agree with Wenger’s latest claims on this Arsenal star

With all the goalkeepers currently in the Premier League, Arsene Wenger believes he has one of the best in Wojciech Szczesny and envisages a bright future for the 21-year-old polish shot-stopper, despite only playing half a season as the number one since his debut last year.

Szczesny left Poland for London in 2006 at the age of 15 and spent much of the 2009/10 season on loan at Brentford after graduating from the academy.

Wenger’s assurances over playing opportunities convinced him to sign a new deal when his contract was due to expire at the end of last season. A smart piece of business in my opinion, considering the fact that Wenger couldn’t find a good enough replacement for Jens Lehmann when the German left three years ago.

Arsenal had to rely on Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski, who at the time were a pair you wouldn’t put much faith in due to their calamitous nature. However, despite their poor performances, Wenger resisted the temptation to buy an experienced goalkeeper, though the Frenchman did come close to singing Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer last year – a deal I’m glad never went through. If it had we may not have seen Shezza for a while.

Following his bright start, Wenger had this to say about Szczesny:

‘He is one of the best already in his first season [in the starting lineup].

‘He has, like the team I must say, a promising future. We are confident that if he keeps his attitude and determination to do well he can be one of the best.

‘I wouldn’t like to put too much pressure on him. My secret belief is that he shouldn’t set any limitations on his progress and personally I am confident that he can let other people judge how good he is.’
