Uruguay’s Copa America winning side during the summer was full of players who impressed the football world.

The one player currently under the spotlight though is Atletico Madrid’s 25-year-old centre-back Diego Godin.

Godin’s brilliant displays for both club and country have really got Europe’s elite lining up for his services, and his agent, Diego Heredia Triguero, has confirmed that he’s been in contact with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. However, no formal approaches from these sides mentioned have been made.

Triguero told Calciomercato.com:

‘As I said, Godin is talked about a lot in England, there are clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal who are also quite careful about certain players.

‘I’ve spoken a little to all of them. But real negotiations have not yet been launched.’

From an Arsenal point of view it would be wise of Arsene Wenger to buy another defender, as the uncertainty of player fitness and injuries continue to grow along our back-line. It would be a relief to call upon experience if Thomas Vermaelen gets injured again or has to play at left-back when Laurent Koscielny plays at right-back, leaving Per Mertesacker with an experienced partner rather than the unpredictable duo that is Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci.
